Well where to start. Starting with the first Monday in August the Landmarks board met every Monday in August to mid September to work on the house and grounds. We were getting the property ready for the Trial & Tribulations event. It was held on the weekend of Sept. 18th & 19th. Also in September Antioch was holding their 2nd annual Ice Cream Social to help raise funds for Church camp. It was held the 12th of September. So that ment our worship group needed to practice so around the first part of August we started meeting on Wednesday nights to practice and put together a program. Also over Labor day weekend we took a little trip. Are you tired yet? Any way our trip was really nice and relaxing. The Ice Cream Social was a success. And Trial and Tribulations was an amazing event. http://matson1847.blogspot.com/
So here are just a few pictures.
Dr Jorns, playwright and director. Was a huge part of the events success.
The cast. My Aunt Karan made a comment that the play was as good as anything they had seen at Beef & Boards in Indianapolis.
The new sign and the Rutherford House. Our connection to "Looking for Lincoln"The Dr's Office. We've been told it's the last free standing pioneer Dr office in the state of Illinois.
The Dr. Hiram Rutherford Home. Oakland's first educated physician. One of the main characters in the Trial & Tribulations event.
For those that don't know the background for the Trial & Tribulations event. In 1847 Dr. Rutherford and Gideon Ashmore tried to hire Abraham Lincoln to represent a slave family who were from a farm north of Oakland about 10 miles. Anyway the Bryant family were afraid that their children would be "sold south" so the asked Rutherford and Ashmore for help.
Abraham Lincoln had tell Rutherford he had already taken the case for Col. Matson. In then end Lincoln lost the case, the slaves were freed. This was one of the top cases in Lincoln's law practice and the only time Lincoln represented a slave owner. It's also one of the top cases in the state of Illinois.
