Oakland High School

The high school in Oakland is being torn down this week.  So many memories, some happy, some sad but
all were shared with friends.  I wouldn't have traded going to a small school for anything.  Yes we had less than 50 students in our graduating class.  But you know what, we knew everyone's name and where they lived.  When my children were going to school here I didn't have to worry who their friends were, because I knew them and their parents.  Did we miss out on anything, probably, but I don't know what it would be.  I choose to think we got so much more.  We've got Doctors and lawyers, businessmen and women, teachers, farmers, accountants and any other profession that graduated from OHS just like the bigger schools.  I still have my best friends from high school as my best friends.  No they don't live in Oakland BUT we are still best friends.

I wrote the Birkey Buzz this week.  The weekly article in our local paper.

It's not just a building made with bricks and mortar.
Memories were made there.
Whether you're an Oak or a Titan, whether the walls stand tall or the bricks line a walkway.
All that really matters is why she stood.
Who walked the halls, the friends we hold dear,
the teachers that made a difference,
the education we received,
the fun we had.
Driving by brings a tear, not from sadness as much as remembering -
teachers and friends.
So this week we say goodbye to the old and hello to the new, encouraging the next generation of
Oakland High School graduates to step out and make a difference.
